一、基数词

1、在句子中作定语，前面一般不加定冠词the，例如：

Fifty thousand London dockers are out on strike.

五万伦敦码头工人罢工了。

I need forty pears. 我要40个梨。

2、可以在句子中作主语，表示数目或者指代人、物。例如：

Forty is enough.四十个就够了.

Seven is an odd number.七是奇数。

Happy the three sent out.这三个高高兴兴地出发了。

There are eight of us in all.我们总共是8个人。

3、可以在句子中作宾语或者介宾，例如：

I need forty.我要40。

The Beijing City has a population of twenty million.

北京市有两千万人口。

4、放在系动词后做表语，例如：

We are altogether eight.我们总共8个。

Three plus two is five.2加3等于5。

5、作同位语。例如：

Are you two coming? 你们俩来吗？

They ten will go abroad. 他们十个人将出国。

二、序数词

1、主要做定语（前面必须加定冠词the或者是物主代词），例如：

People celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the P.R.C.

人民庆祝了中华人民共和国成立60周年。

He got the first place in the 110-meter hurdle.

他在110米栏比赛中取得了冠军。

2、当序数词前不加定冠词时，可以表示“又一，再一”，例如：

We’ll do it a second time.

我们要再做一次。

Shall I ask you a third time?

我还要再问你第三次吗？

3、序数词表示“第……个人/批”，例如：

You will be the second to speak.

你是第二个发言。

4、序数词前一定加定冠词the,但是下列4种情况不用定冠词：

1）、序数词前已有物主代词或名词所有格时，不能再用冠词。例如：

This is Tom’s second visit to China.

这是汤姆第二次访问中国。

2）、表示比赛或考试的名词时，通常省略定冠词。例如：

He was (the) second in the English exam.

在这次英语考试中他得了第二名。

3）、序数词被用作副词时不用冠词。例如：

I have to finish my homework first.

我得先把作业完成好。

4）、在某些习语中不用冠词。例如：

at first起初, first of all首先, at first sight乍一看

5、作主语。例如：

The first day of May is International Labour Day．

五月一日是国际劳动节。

6、作表语。作表语时，序数词前的定冠词往往省去。例如：

Lynd was second last year.

林德去年是第二。

7、作宾语。例如：

He was among the first to arrive.

他是首批到达的人员之一。

8、作同位语。例如：

Who is the woman, the second in the second line?

在第二列第二个的那个妇女是谁？

9、在很多情况下，我们可以用基数词代替序数词来表示顺序。例如：

the second part = Part two 第二部分

the first chapter = Chapter one 第一章

the fourth section = Section four 第四节
